This morning our drive takes us to The Kuchaman Fort, built atop of 1000 feet high rock cliff is now a heritage hotel. An exotic mix of the modern and ancient. An amazing contrast of the severity of its exterior and the sheer delicacy of the beauty of its interior. As you go winding up and undulating mountain road, towards the massive portals of this magnificent fort you travel back, back in time, only to be swallowed into the inside of this ancient world of strange mysteries, of secret chants and mantras, of classical music and ragas, and of fine arts and murals. The view at night of the lit-up city and the Aravalli hills and Sambar lake in the distance is enchanting.

The Kuchamani folk artists and crafts persons have stalls in the Meena Bazaar, within the fort complex, selling exquisitely made handicrafts. The fort also houses a museum of weapons and armour. A major part of the collection is in gold or silver with floral and geometrical motifs. The hall of the palace houses the beautiful miniature paintings, murals and gilded work. Today we head towards the old walled city of Jaipur – Founded by Maharaja Jai Singh II, this ‘pink city’ is meticulously constructed on the lines of the Shilpa – Shastra, an ancient Hindu treatise on architecture. Evening we explore the city and indulge in shopping for gemstones, silver jewellery, Paintings, blue pottery and hand printed textiles that Jaipur is renowned for. Overnight stay at the hotel.

DAY 05: Jaipur / Fatehpur sikri / Delhi

After enjoying a hearty breakfast at the hotel we drive 4hrs to Fatehpur Sikri - which has been described as “the world’s most perfectly preserved ghost town”. Built by Akbar in the late 16th century, Akbar intended his city of Fatehpur Sikri to serve as an imperial capital, an alternate to the overcrowded city of Agra. Completed in 1585, the city was abandoned after only 15 years because of insufficient water supply. Thereafter it remained deserted, and almost perfectly preserved. Here the early Mughal fusion of Hindu and Muslim architectural styles was embodied in spacious courtyards, wide palaces, and open pavillions, quarried from the local sandstone and cooled by numerous water channels, ponds, and tanks.
